Missoula sits at the confluence of five mountain valleys in western Montana, anchored by the University of Montana and a metro population of about 120,000. The city has a distinctly different feel from Bozeman—more counter-culture college town, less Silicon Valley remote-worker inflow—and serves as the regional medical and retail hub for a vast catchment area that includes the Bitterroot Valley, the Flathead, and most of north-central Idaho.

For our Missoula moves the operational variable is the I-90 corridor itself. Western Montana sits at the intersection of weather systems coming off the Pacific (snow, rain, wind off the coast) and continental cold fronts dropping out of Canada and across the Rockies. Homestake Pass closes for weather more often than any other pass on our regular routes, and we plan accordingly. Forest fire smoke in August and early September is also a real factor here—the Bitterroot and Lolo National Forests burn most summers, and air quality can drop into hazardous ranges that affect our crews working outdoors. We adjust loading and unloading windows around AQI when needed.

Popular Areas: Downtown Missoula and the University District for walkable in-town living. The Northside and Westside for newer affordable housing. Rattlesnake Valley and Pattee Canyon for forested in-town neighborhoods with hiking-trail access. Lolo for the southern corridor toward Hamilton. Frenchtown and East Missoula for affordability west and east of the city. Hamilton (45 minutes south in the Bitterroot Valley) for true small-town and rural living. Florence and Stevensville for the upper Bitterroot.

The Missoula economy runs on the University, St. Patrick Hospital and Community Medical Center, the U.S. Forest Service regional headquarters, and a growing software and outdoor-industry footprint (Patagonia has a regional office, and several outdoor-gear brands manufacture or design here). Montana's no sales tax applies and state income tax is 5-6% depending on bracket. Housing has risen sharply but remains below Bozeman. Best moving months are May through October; outside that window, expect schedule flexibility for mountain pass weather.
